Tufts Health Plan Awards $50,000 to Local High Schools Through "Fitness for Your Future"
Providence, RI.—Tufts Health Plan is pleased to announce that Cranston East High School in Providence County, West Warwick High School in Kent County, East Bay Met School in Bristol County, Mt. Hope High School in Newport County, and Chariho Regional High School in Washington County, have each been awarded $10,000 through the “Fitness for Your Future” essay contest. Together with Sports Radio 103.7 WEEI-FM and CVS Caremark, Tufts Health Plan launched the program at the start of the 2009-2010 school year to promote health and physical activity among high school youths. Open to all Rhode Island high schools - public, private, and parochial - “Fitness for Your Future” encouragedauthorized school officials to submit an essay describing how $10,000 would be used to create a health, wellness, or fitness-related program to benefit the students of their high school.One school from each of the five counties in Rhode Island was selected among eligible entries to win $10,000 to institute the program at their school.

According to data from a 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey – Rhode Island, and the 2009 Rhode Island Kids Count Factbook, in 2007, 26.9% of Rhode Island high school students were either overweight (16%) or obese (11%); during the 2007-2008 school year, 18% of seventh graders in Rhode Island were obese; and in 2006, Rhode Island ranked worst nationally for the percentage of children and teens who exercise regularly.
